Reiko the Zombie Shop
Terror has struck the sleepy little town of Shiraike. A serial killer stalks the streets murdering innocent girls. Twenty-nine grisly murders have been committed, with no clues to catch the killer. That is, until the town receives a strange visitor: a beautiful young woman who can raise the dead. She is Reiko the Zombie Shop, necromancer for hire. For a price, she'll wake your dead, if only to find a clue to their demise, but she's not responsible for what the dead will say or do once they awaken!

Bleach
Ichigo Kurosaki never asked for the ability to see ghosts -- he was born with the gift. When his family is attacked by a Hollow -- a malevolent lost soul -- Ichigo becomes a Soul Reaper, dedicating his life to protecting the innocent and helping the tortured spirits themselves find peace. Find out why Tite Kubo's Bleach has become an international manga smash-hit!

Blade of the Immortal
"To end his eternal suffering, he must slay one thousand enemies!" Manji, a ronin warrior of feudal Japan, has been cursed with immortality. To rid himself of this curse and end his life of misery, he must slay one thousand evil men! His quest begins when a young girl seeks his help in taking revenge on her parents' killers . . . and his quest won't end until the blood of a thousand has spilled!

we say: A fun punkish samurai story; everyone has a cool gimmicked weapon or style, and oh yeah, the characters are actually deep and interesting, too! Award-winning art on every page.

Vagabond
Striving for enlightenment by way of the sword, Miyamoto Musashi is prepared to cut down anyone who stands in his way. Vagabond is an action-packed portrayal of the life and times of the quintessential warrior-philosopher--the most celebrated samurai of all time!

we say: Amazing art, and a surprisingly spiritual story for one so violent. Goes very deeply into Musashi's personal development and philosophy, and could actually serve as a bible for artists, athletes, or those seeking to better themselves.

MPD Psycho
MPD-Psycho, the most-requested manga series in recently memory, is presented uncut and uncensored in all of its controversial and unflinchingly grotesque glory! If Takashi Miike's MPD-Psycho television series still has you confused and reeling, the original manga series that inspired the show is sure to take you on a longer, darker journey into madness. Enjoy the MPD-Psycho series for all of its absurd twists, sci-fi touches, and inventive torture scenes, but you'll also be mesmerized by the plethora of odd conspiracies and case files found in Otsuka and Tajima's uncontrollable, urban horrorshow.

we say: Really gory, with a good conspiracy plot to keep the casefile busy. Basically, it's about a criminal profiler with multiple personality disorder (MPD) who solves almost insoluble CSI-style murders. Feeds your inner wolf.

Berserk
His name is Guts, the Black Swordsman, a feared warrior spoken of only in whispers. Bearer of a gigantic sword, an iron hand, and the scars of countless battles and tortures, his flesh is also indelibly marked with The Brand, an unholy symbol that draws the forces of darkness to him and dooms him as their sacrifice. But Guts won't take his fate lying down; he'll cut a crimson swath of carnage through the ranks of the damned -- and anyone else foolish enough to oppose him! Accompanied by Puck the Elf, more an annoyance than a companion, Guts relentlessly follows a dark, bloodstained path that leads only to death...or vengeance. Created by Kenturo Miura, Berserk is manga mayhem to the extreme -- violent, horrifying, and mercilessly funny -- and the wellspring for the internationally popular anime series. Not for the squeamish or the easily offended, Berserk asks for no quarter -- and offers none!

we say: A house favorite; the art in Berserk is nothing less than astonishing, and the action is riveting. Berserk mixes supernatural horror with an epic revenge saga. Best read twice -- once for the plot, which you can't put down, and once to comprehend the art.

Cromartie High School
Meet Takashi Kamiyama, age 16. He seems normal enough, but somehow or other he ended up at Cromartie High School, where being normal or even smart won't get you anywhere except perhaps jumped for your lunch money. You can't be too sure. The only thing for certain is that for Kamiyama, Cromartie High School is his reality. And what a surreal reality it is. Because this is where the toughest, meanest (and often the dumbest) students are sent to do time. At Cromartie, purple haired-mohawked bruisers and pencil-chomping street thugs are just part of everyday life. And so is a 400-pound gorilla. And a macho brute named Freddie who travels with his own theme music. And, of course, Mechazawa, the student voted most likely to need an oil change. So pack your bags, put on your best tough-guy swagger, and get a lesson in insanity from the hilarious losers at Cromartie High. This is one class you won't ever want to cut.

Tokyo Boys & Girls
Mimori Kosaka's dream comes true when she's accepted to the Meidai Attached High School and gets to wear their super-fashionable uniform! She's excited about having a fun and fulfilling freshman year of high school, but things don't turn out as effortlessly as she had hoped. The school year starts off well when Mimori befriends the beautiful Nana, but things quickly turn sour for her when she is chosen to be the class representative. Through a series of unfortunate events, she finds herself the focus of attention by three boys and her teachers for all the wrong reasons! Mimori is reunited with Atsushi, a boy she knew in elementary school. Their reunion is far from sweet since he despises her for allegedly bullying him in their elementary school days. In fact he plans to exact a little revenge!
Ghost in the Shell
In a world in which the human mind can be programmed like a computer, where does the human soul end and the cybernetic machinery begin? What does it mean to be human? From Masamune Shirow, the creator of Appleseed, Orion, and Dominion: Tank Police, comes an epic, dystopian tale of politics, covert actions, and cyborgs with too much attitude!

we say: GITS will blow your mind. It starts out as what you think will be a sort of futuristic buddy-cop story, and becomes a thesis on the position of computer systems in human or world evolution. Like the 2001 of manga.

Kurohime
A master gunman named Zero searches the land for the legendary Kurohime. She saved him as a child, impressing upon him the importance of justice and helping others. While on his journey he meets a young girl named Himeko and is suddenly attacked by overwhelming forces. Outnumbered, outgunned and out of luck he makes his last stand in order to protect this "helpless" girl. Little does he know this girl has an incredible secret...

we say: Total fan service, with a real will-they-won't-they romance plot, plus lots of monsters and bosses!

With the Light: Raising an Autistic Child
With the Light: Raising an Autistic Child is a simultaneously poignant and heartwarming story of a young mother attempting to cope with an increasingly common affliction. With the Light has been universally recognized for its sensitive portrayal of autism, winning an Excellence Prize for manga at the eighth annual Japan Media Arts Festival.

we say: I was interested in this one because it deals with a disease that's becoming more common among American children; it's done by a writer/artist that uses all the stylistic conventions of shojo romance books, but to pretty heart-rending effect, rather than simple cliche. It's pretty informative, too, if you're not well-informed about this disease; I'd recommend it to anyone who has or knows an autistic or Asperger's child!
